YES, YOU CAN GET FIRED FOR WHAT YOU SAY ON TWITTER & FACEBOOK

So you are heading out into the real world looking for a job for the first time! Many teenagers looking for summer jobs for 16 year olds will be in the same boat you are, all trying to find businesses that will hire teens that have jobs open.

One thing you mustn’t do is make the same mistake Gilbert Gottfried did on his Twitter account. Gilbert is a stand up comedian who has been in a few movies and currently he was the voice of the Aflac duck in commercials. I say “was” because he just got fired for making inappropriate jokes about the Japanese and the awful earthquake/tsunami/nuclear tragedy they are going through.

One thing you must do when you are looking for a job and once you get a job is to watch what you type/say on Twitter, Facebook, Myspace, and any other social media account you might have. Real adults are getting fired for what they say and so will you!

Why does it matter what you say and do on those accounts? Isn’t there free speech in America? What does it matter what you do on your own free time on your own accounts?

It matters because once you get a job you represent the employer you work for. While you are not working for them 24/7, you are their employee and they don’t want people working for them that say stupid things. They want you, as their employee, to conduct yourself in a responsible manner always.

You might think that your employer will ever read what you write but that is a chance you shouldn’t take. One of your friends (or enemies) might tell your boss and they could find out that way.

16 year olds are very used to communicating online and when you are responsible enough to go out job hunting, you should realize that you need to pull back on some of the things you do and say online. If you don’t, you could end up getting fired from that job you worked so hard to get or you might never get it at all just because of your online antics!
